Franschhoek

Founded by French Huguenots over 350 years ago, Franschhoek village is regarded as the culinary capital of South Africa. Here, fine dining establishments and an artisanal route feature the finest chocolate, olives, cheeses, charcuterie and baked goods. The Stellenbosch wine route is the oldest in South Africa, established in 1971 and constantly evolving to spotlight the spectacular varietals of the region.

 

The Constantia Wine Region

Filled with heritage and landscapes of unsurpassed beauty, the Constantia Winelands is the oldest wine-making region in the Southern Hemisphere and is located beneath the Table Mountain National Park and the Constantiaberg. Constantia is the birthplace of the wine farming industry in South Africa, located just 20 minutes outside of Cape Town’s city centre. Groot Constantia has an incredibly rich history and incredible views that can keep you busy for hours. Their wines are world-class and they offer their patrons a unique experience, including unbelievable chocolate and wine pairing with their Master Chocolatiers. While the estate is on the Cape Town Sightseeing Bus Route, it has truly been able to maintain its unique charm and personalised experience. The beautiful winery has two beautiful restaurants on-site if you’re wanting to have a delicious lunch. Dine Al Fresco at the well-renowned Jonkershuis Restaurant.

Venture in the Constantia Wine Valley on a Wine Safari at Eagle’s Nest Wines

Eagle’s Nest is a real gem; arriving through the beautifully canopied entrance you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Kirstenbosch Gardens. The unassuming winery is located on the slopes of the Constantia Mountain Range but nothing can prepare you for the beauty you’ll experience. The Wine Safari takes you through the estate, where you’ll be able to make stops either to drink your incredible wine at a table overlooking Cape Town or simply to get out, smell the fresh air and take a well-crafted selfie. The selection of wines is exquisite and regardless of your wine knowledge you’ll be guided through the tasting and leave feeling like a true wine connoisseur.

 

For the Family

Family Time in the Winelands:

Wine tasting isn’t the only thing that’s on offer in the Cape’s wine region. There are a host of family activities that make a journey to the vineyards fun for little kids and big kids alike. Start with the creature comforts on this tour, and visit the Cheetah Outreach Centre for an up-close encounter with the spotted cats. Crocodile farms, lion parks and an entire exhibition dedicated to the many species of monkeys are also on offer. Then it’s time to get outdoors and let the little kids explore. During the summer months, strawberry picking is a sweet pastime the whole family can enjoy. But no matter the season, all the vineyards allow youngsters to stroll the vineyard’s rolling fields and gardens. Spier Wine Estate offers ample space for kids to play, including dedicated play areas and kids’ activities. As the kids play, the adults can enjoy the estates’ superior wines before gathering the family for a picnic lunch. If the weather isn’t cooperating, a table at the estate’s restaurant is equally family-friendly.

Butterfly World

Butterfly World is the largest park with free-flying butterflies in South Africa. For the more courageous, there is also a spider room with glass displays of indigenous and exotic spiders and scorpions, and a large iguana cage that shows these large lizards in their tropical environment. An outdoor garden hosts a large aviary, a meerkat enclosure and wandering ducks, chickens and goats eagerly waiting for children to hand feed and pet them.

Cheetah Outreach

The Cheetah Outreach Centre, found at Paardelvlei in Somerset West, is a unique educational outing for children and adults. A personal encounter with an adult cheetah or a cheetah cub is the highlight and will instil a love and respect for these predators. The centre’s cheetah outreach project raises awareness of the decline in cheetah numbers due to loss of habitat, predation and poaching.

Drakenstein Lion Park

The Drakenstein Lion Park in Paarl Valley is a sanctuary for lions born in captivity that cannot be rehabilitated into the wild. Guests can enjoy a stroll through the park and view the fascinating animals at eye level, or get a bird’s eye view from one of the raised viewing platforms. There are also ostriches and farmyard animals on view at the park.

Le Bonheur Croc Farm

Located between Paarl and Franschhoek, Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm is a family destination that houses 1,000 mighty crocodiles and offers an insightful glimpse into the lives of these pre‐historic reptiles. Guided crocodile pond tours take visitors across ramps on open dams, and the brave can even touch and hold a baby crocodile. The visitor centre also offers catch-and-release fishing in its well-stocked dam, which holds bass and tilapia.

Monkey Town

This sanctuary for monkeys and apes is home to more than 230 animals, including 28 different monkey species and the famous chimp sisters. Situated just outside of Somerset‐West, Monkey Town allows visitors to wander through walkways where the monkeys roam freely. Interaction with tame monkeys under guided supervision is a firm favourite among children. Koi ponds, numerous bird species and small antelope also roam on the premises.

Spier Estate

Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with lush gardens ideal for family picnics and a playground for children. Sip on a glass of award-winning wine from the estate, or browse through the gallery while the children discover the delights of the substantial garden. Supervised pony and cart rides are available on the lawns, and there is a horse carriage tour and equestrian centre for older children.

Spier Wine Estate Eagle Encounter

This informative Eagle Encounter Centre is a bird of prey rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-¬tourism project on the Spier Estate, and is sure to intrigue children and adults. There are a variety of fun and insightful displays that allow visitors to watch as hand-raised eagles learn to fly or observe the hunting styles of various birds of prey.

Strawberry Picking (Seasonal)

Delight in the fruits of your labour as you make your way through strawberry fields and scarecrows in the Cape summer season. Strawberry picking begins in November at Mooiberg Farm, which is close to Stellenbosch and its scenic backdrop of mountains and vineyards. The summer sun and fresh, juicy hand-picked strawberries make for a sumptuous outing.

Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre

The Giraffe House is a privately owned centre promoting education, knowledge and respect of African wildlife and heritage. The centre is home to special animals such as the smallest antelope in the world, the blue duiker, as well as the largest antelope in the world, the eland. Other noteworthy animals include the tallest animal in the world, the giraffe, and the largest vicious reptile in Africa, the Nile crocodile. Daily animal encounters where visitors have the opportunity to see and even hold some of these incredible creatures.

Toy and Miniature Museum

A world of enchantment awaits at the Toy and Miniature Museum in Stellenbosch. The museum gives an overview of toys through the years and houses a collection of 1:12 scale miniature houses, antique dolls, cars, cuddly toys and more. An intricately detailed and lifelike miniature of South Africa’s famous Blue Train is also on show. It puts on an impressive display as it travels from a miniature Stellenbosch, through a small-scale Cape Winelands and to the Karoo where it passes a miniature Matjiesfontein. The museum has a small shop where doll’s house furniture, accessories, gifts and treats are for sale.
