Begin your wildflower coastal escapade in the alluring village of Melkbosstrand. Escape the city madness with a leisurely stroll along the expansive white sandy beach, and breathe in the fresh sea air intertwined with the milky fragrance of the Euphorbiaceae bushes.
Soak up the history of the Battle of Blaauwberg, which remains anchored in time by the cannon that stands on the foreshore of the beach. For those who seek a rush, spend sunny days sandboarding, kiteboarding or horseback riding, and then unwind at the Melkbosch Food Fair market held every first Saturday of the month.
Continue along the coast and enjoy a hike through the West Coast National Park to experience the full brunt of the spring wildflower display. Capture sights of eland, bontebok and the Cape mountain zebra while drifting through a cloud of colourful flowers that dominate the veld.
Bring yourself back to reality with a refreshing dip in the Langebaan Lagoon – the focal point of the West Coast National Park. Immerse yourself deeper into the abundance of indigenous florals by making your way to Darling and taste the local award-winning craft beer from Darling Brewery.

Melkbosstrand
Melkbosstrand, translated as ‘milk bush beach’ gets its name from the Euphorbiaceae bushes that border the sand dunes and produce an intriguing milky fragrance. Just a short 20-minute drive from Cape Town, Melkbosstrand serves as the starting point of the spring wildflower display, which begins within the region’s outlying fields and continues all the way to the Namaqualand area.
West Coast National Park
The West Coast National Park is the premier location to experience the wildflower display. Springtime brings with it an eruption of colour and beauty throughout the veld. There are a number of hikes and walks on offer, with the well-known Postberg walk being a guaranteed option for capturing picturesque scenes of game such as eland, bontebok and Cape mountain zebra. The Langebaan Lagoon, with its idyllic salt marshes and wetlands, is also a firm favourite for a quick dip or water sport activity.
Darling
Darling is known as the flower of the West Coast for its abundance of indigenous florals during spring, including a number of endangered species found nowhere else in the world. The quaint town is also home to famous South African comedian Pieter Dirk Uys, who has transformed the old train station into a theatre and small museum of recent history. Between flower viewing, quench your thirst at the Darling Craft Beer Brewery, one of South Africa’s first and award-winning microbreweries.
