Cape Town is an underrated South African birding destination. Bird Watching in Cape Town is diverse and offers bird-watchers many varieties of birds to see. The best time to visit the Cape from a birding perspective is late August to November. This is the height of both the spring flower and the breeding season. There are more than 800 spectacular bird species to be seen whilst enjoying the rich botanical heritage, extensive wildlife and vast scenic beauty.


Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve

is one of the most spectacular reserves with striking landscapes, botanical diversity and in contrast a low density bird species. Specials in the Cape Point Reserve include Peregrine Falcon, Plain-backed Pipit, Grassbird, Hottentot Buttonquail and Cape Siskin.

Constantia Greenbelts

are the best places to see Knysna Warbler. Other specials are Cape Batis, Buff-spotted flufftail and African Wood-owl.

Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens

one of the best botanical gardens in the world, is home to a number of Cape endemics such as the Cape Spurfowl, Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird.

Boulders Penguin Colony Simonstown

is home to over 1,000 pairs of the endemic African Penguin. Other specials include Brimstone Canary, Cape Cormorant, Cape Sugarbird and Southern Boubou.


offers access endemic Bank and Crowned Cormorants and African Black Oystercatcher.

Intaka Island

has a good selection of water-bird and is a good place to see Greater painted Snipe, African Snipe and Malachite Kingfisher.


is home to a number of widespread water-bird species and good area for Levaillant’s Cisticola and Common Waxbill.

Rondevlei Nature Reserve

is a well maintain reserve with Hippopotamus and a wide variety of water-birds. The reserve has two observation towers, a number of bird hides and offers boat trips to the breeding colonies. Specials are African Purple Swamphen, African Spoonbill, Purple Heron, Little Bittern and African Snipe.

Paarl Mountain Reserve

offers good Fynbos birding and is a good site for the Protea Seed-eater. Specials include Bar-throated Apalis, Cape Batis, Cape Bulbul, Fiscal Flycatcher and Malachite Sunbird.

Paarl Bird Sanctuary

offers excellent birding with specials African Reed-warbler, African Paradise Flycatcher, Southern Pochard, Maccoa Duck, Black Crake, Water Thick-knee, Grey-headed Gull and White-winged Tern.

West Coast National Park

is best known for the large numbers of migrant waders, but also offers excellent Strandveld birding. Specials include Black Harrier, Cape Penduline-tit, Southern Black Korhaan, White-backed Mousebird, Long-billed Crombec, Bokmakierie and Yellow Canary
