The Company Gardens in the middle of the CBD, is also home to a beautiful rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and bird aviary. The tree-lined avenue, with its benches and resident squirrels, make it for a perfect location for a stroll with the kids. Stop to browse the creations of local crafters and buy a bag of raw nuts and allow the kids to feed the many squirrels who call the gardens home.
Whilst in the Company Garden, you can also explore the South African Museum and Planetarium. The museum in Cape Town has an excellent dinosaur exhibition which the kids will love. A whale well and underwater exhibition, displays of South African rock carvings and a showcase of the life of the indigenous people in South Africa will keep the little ones intrigued.
Scramble & Search for Gemstones! A fun family activity, where the kids and parents will have fun rummaging through thousands of tumble-polished gemstones. Kids will be kept entertained searching for their favourite shapes and colours as they decide which treasures to bring home. South Africa is one of the leading producers of gemstones in the world. There are two outlets, one at the V&A Waterfront and the other in Simon’s Town which is the main branch and where the factory is situated. In the gemstone factory you can view how the stones are tumbled, processed and polished to produce the final product.
The delightful colourful underwater nature reserve is located at the V&A Waterfront and with over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fish, turtles, and penguins on display, this makes for an exciting visit for the whole family. Offering a variety of display tanks, interactive experiences, a touch pool and the highly popular predator’s tank. There is a wonderful child play area in the basement set right up against the seal display where children and seals have fun alongside one another.
The Planetarium is also housed in the South African Museum building, at the top of the Company Gardens. It offers great shows for the kids. Inside the domed auditorium, the night sky is recreated, where kids will be amazed by the interactive show and all the little lights and stars – an extraordinary audio-visual experience for old and young.
The Jolly Roger Pirate ship is the only authentic looking pirate ship in South Africa. Children will love the sense of adventure as they set sail out to sea and enjoy the live pirate show. Cruises are 1 hour long and leave from Quay 5 in the V&A Waterfront and are subject to weather conditions.
